The 2014 ATV/UTV Instructor course dates are (updated May 2):

The ATV/UTV Instructor course dates are: May 4-11, 2014 (ATV - Mon to Fri, then UTV - Sat to Mon)

ATV - (5 days)
UTV upgrade – (3 days)

ATV Instructor course registration fee is $1800.00. Must have successfully completed the ATV Instructor course before taking the UTV Instructor upgrade course. The theory training techniques are similar between the ATV and UTV courses, so more emphasis is placed on the practicality of teaching the UTV skills.

Optional - UTV Instructor course registration fee $700.00.

Total if taking both certifications is $2500.00.

As there are costs involved to get the course rolling the following payments are to be received:

1. A payment of $700 to be received by Friday March 28, 2014 . (This $700 is non-refundable, cover costs of classroom bookings, student kits, etc). Please indicate if your are signing up for the ATV or the ATV and UTV instructor certification training.

Note: A minimum of 4 instructor candidates (to maximum 8 instructor candidates) is needed to conduct the course; if the course does not reach 4 candidates, the course will be cancelled and you will receive a FULL refund.

2. The balance to be received no later than Thursday April 17, 2014 to confirm your position on this training course. If no payment, then do not show up on Monday April 7, 2014.

A receipt will be provided for the full amount on the first day of the course.

The ATV Instructor Course takes 5 days to complete. Homework in the evenings and must be completed as part of successfully completing the course. There is a final exam to be written and must be passed.

The UTV Instructor Course takes an additional 3 days to complete.

In 2012, three people started the course and successfully completed the ATV/UTV Instructor training.

Of note, a candidate in 2010 was not successful as he did not complete the evening work and failed to prepare to instruct lessons for the peer teaching phase. This person exited the course on Day 3 at lunch.

Course start time each day is 8:00 am. Assuming all goes well, training to be completed between no later than 5:00 pm daily.

Class size: minimum 4 to a maximum 8 instructor candidates per class.


Rough itinerary as follows:

Day 1
- introductions, what to expect, teach the 1 day ATV Safety course, what the instructor candidate will be teaching on Friday

Day 2
- finish teaching the one day ATV safety course,
- Skills test for instructor candidates in the morning,
- theory in the afternoon. Some lessons are timing the instructor candidates and you must meet or exceed the standard in order to continue on in the course. Take home open book exam.

Day 3
- Micro Teaching ( practical for the instructor candidates for peer teaching).

Day 4
- if all instructor candidates have passed their tests to date we move onto Range Management Practice, Coaching and Evaluation Practice, as well as the Evaluation and debrief.
- Afternoon, final in-class exam, (closed book).

Day 5
- expect a full day, this is when you put everything together from start to finish... instructor candidates will be team-teaching an ATV course to new students, wrap up for the ATV Safety Course. Candidates feedback about the course.


Optional UTV Instructors upgrade course
(Instructor candidates must successfully complete ATV Safety Instructor certification to be considered for the UTV upgrade training)

Day 6
- teach the one day UTV safety course, hand out UTV binders and knowledge test

Day 7
- AM: skills test, trail ride
- PM: PowerPoint presentation, review knowledge test
Day 8
- peer teaching UTV safety course, wrap up for UTV Safety Course, Candidates feedback about the course


Each candidate must pass with a minimum 80% mark, for each test ... practical and written.


What do you get for your registration fee?
- CSC qualified ATV/UTV Chief Instructor to teach this ATV/UTV Instructor training course
- CSC Qualified ATV/UTV Instructor (to teach the one day ATV/UTV Safety Course)
- CSC ATV/UTV Safety Course Graduate
- your copy of the CSC Instructor ATV/UTV Safety readings (assuming you make it out of day 1)
- use of a traffic safety vest for the practical portions of the course
- cones and measuring tapes to mark training area
- small class sizes (no more than 8 instructor candidates in a class)

What you must provide:
- ATV/UTV suitably sized for yourself
- appropriately sized and safety-certified helmet
- eye protection
- sturdy foot wear
- long pants
- long sleeve shirt
- gloves
- bring lunch, snacks, something to drink each day
- other appropriate clothing for current / expected climatic conditions each day
- NO ALCOHOL permitted in the training areas


The ATV/UTV safety course is geared to be totally taught in the outdoors, so dress accordingly for current and expected weather conditions. (ie rain or shine or anything in between)

This course will be conducted at a training site I have secured/confirmed in the Abbotsford/Chilliwack area. If inclement weather conditions, then may be using an all weather site just west of Hope.

If you are staying in the Abbotsford area during the course, the theory portions of the course are going to be conducted at the Ramada Inn at Highway 1 and Whatcom Road, Abbotsford.

Remember: minimum 4 to maximum 8 instructor candidates on the course.
